I set up Duthie Translations in 2005 together with my sister, though now I mostly work on my own. Previously I worked at two established translation agencies, one in the UK and one in Spain, where I managed translation projects, and edited and proofread translations. I was brought up bilingually in Spain by British parents, and have spent my life between Spain and Britain, where I went to university. Over the years I learned other languages — Catalan, French, Italian — and I came to specialise in areas that genuinely interest me. I now especially enjoy translating academic papers and articles on humanities and the arts (e.g. Sociology, Philosophy, Fine Art, Literature, History, Archaeology), and have a very special interest in translating documents for the humanitarian sector, having been involved in the drafting of handbooks and training materials over the past decade. I also take great pleasure in translating children’s books, which are often deceptively simple, but require a very different approach and make for a wonderful challenge. I have a personal interest in illustration and writing (see my personal project linked to below), which makes it all the more gratifying.

Even though I mostly work on my own, my experience has made me all too aware of the need for a second pair of eyes to look things over, proofread or edit, and I am very lucky to have people I can trust to do that when required. I also have access to a hand-picked group of excellent, trusted translators for larger projects that may require a bigger team. Having worked for myself for most of my professional life, I understand my clients’ need for reliability — my services are invariably dependable and efficient, and I am extremely responsive.

When I am not translating, I am drawing and writing (in Spanish and English) about playthings from all times and from all over the world, at Portrait of a Plaything.
